Hand-knotted rug in wool and bamboo silk
Tibetan knot technique
This rug marks Gustavo Martini’s first exploration of a two-dimensional surface—a shift that continues to reflect his precise sculptural language. Commissioned by Nodus from Milan, the piece was handmade in India using the Tibetan knot technique, requiring one full month of highly skilled manual work. In tribute to this craftsmanship, Martini created a handmade book of ten proposals, each drawn using pointillism. In an era where digital tools generate gradients in seconds, he chose to experience the time and care involved in the artisanal process by illustrating each variation dot by dot—a quiet homage to the makers behind the object.
The final piece features two large circular gradients in black and white, one rotated at a 45-degree angle. A narrow white line, woven in low relief, cuts through the center—marking a precise axis and emphasizing the structural harmony of the composition. The geometry is deliberate: two volumes in dialogue, balanced by a single defining gesture.
Geometric, essential, and controlled, the rug reflects Martini’s broader inquiry into the human desire for structure and the silent poetry of form. It is not only a visual composition, but also a meditation on labor, repetition, and the dignity of meticulous work—where every knot, like every dot, is a small act of devotion.
